VGCC instructor earns national certification

Tracy L. Wallace of Kittrell, an instructor and head of the Human Services Technology program at Vance-Granville Community College, recently became nationally certified in his field. Wallace (pictured above) earned the Human Services-Board Certified Practitioner (HS-BCP) credential, which is offered by the Center for Credentialing & Education, Inc. (CCE). In July, he passed a national examination, which covered types of material similar to those his students are taught through VGCC’s Human Services degree programs, including ethics, history and crisis intervention.

The relatively new credential was created in 2008 by CCE with the assistance of the National Organization for Human Services in consultation with the Council for Standards in Human Service Education. The credentialing process is currently available both to professionals who practice in human services agencies and to those who teach human services at colleges and universities.

Wallace, who has been the program head/instructor at VGCC since 2000, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at East Carolina University. He also completed post-master’s course work at the University of Georgia and is nationally certified as a counselor through the National Board for Certified Counselors. “The Board Certified Practitioner credential attempts to ensure that those who are teaching and practicing human services are knowledgeable and qualified, and by extension, my credential helps demonstrate that Vance-Granville’s programs are qualified to prepare students for their careers,” Wallace said.

Based at VGCC’s South Campus between Butner and Creedmoor, Human Services Technology is a two-year associate degree program that trains students for entry-level jobs in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and educational services. VGCC offers a general Human Services Technology degree, in addition to tracks in Mental Health and in Substance Abuse counseling .
