VGCC Instructor Earns Cisco Certification

Billie J. Evans, program head/instructor for Information Systems at Vance-Granville Community College, passed the Cisco Systems exam Dec. 28, 2000, to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate.

Evans is one of four VGCC instructors who underwent Cisco Regional Academy training September-December to qualify to teach in the Cisco Academy at Vance-Granville, which will begin the local training this month.

Cisco Systems is the largest producer of routers, which control computer networks, connecting a series of computers in separate areas. The Cisco curriculum at VGCC will consist of four courses spread over four semesters and will be available to Information Systems students, as well as special students.

“I’m excited about beginning the Cisco Academy at Vance-Granville,” Evans said. “It will open the door for many job opportunities for students who complete the program.”

There are currently about 362,000 unfilled information technology jobs in the United States, and persons completing the Cisco Academy training will be eligible for many of those, Evans said.

In addition to Information Systems curriculum students, people who have computer, internet, and math skills or people working in the field who want to enhance their job skills are eligible for the Cisco training at VGCC. Persons who complete the four courses should be prepared to take the Cisco Certified Network Administrator exam, which Evans recently passed.

The first Cisco Academy course – NET 125 , Routing and Switching I – will be taught in both day and evening sessions, beginning Jan. 9. Interested persons should contact Evans at (252) 492-2061 (e-mail: evansb@vgcc.edu) or Faith Harris at (252) 492-2061 (e-mail: harrisf@vgcc.edu) for more information. To register for the classes, students should contact the Admissions Office at VGCC.

Billie Evans joined Vance-Granville Community College in July 2000 after having been department head for Information Systems Technology at Halifax Community College. She holds a B.S. in education and an M.B.A. from East Carolina University, and she lives in Roanoke Rapids.
