VGCC Human Services student becomes Guardian ad Litem

Sonya L. Jones of Creedmoor, a Human Services Technology student at Vance-Granville Community College, recently completed training to become a volunteer Guardian ad Litem (GAL) advocate. District Court Judge Carolyn Yancey (pictured above, right) administered the GAL oath to Jones (pictured above, left) on Aug. 11 at the Granville County Courthouse. The local Guardian ad Litem program was the site for Jones’ cooperative work experience (Co-Op), or internship. Such an experience at an approved agency is a requirement of the Human Services program. “Sonya is an asset to our program, and we are grateful that she chose GAL for her Co-Op,” said Mary Jo Van Horne, Guardian ad Litem Program District Administrator for Judicial District 9 (Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties).

GAL volunteers across the state advocate for abused and neglected children who are involved in court proceedings because of petitions filed by a local Department of Social Services. For more information on GAL, call (919) 497-3010.
