VGCC Helps Beginners Learn Italian

An Italian course for beginners is being offered by Vance-Granville Community College this fall. Classes will be held on Mondays, Sept. 10 through Nov. 12, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the college’s Franklin County Campus, located on N.C. 56 about one mile west of Louisburg.Whether a student needs practical language for a trip to Italy or just wants a fun learning experience, instructor Giulia Vitale of Warrenton thinks that anyone can benefit from the class. She added that students will learn practical vocabulary, as well as recipes, and no previous knowledge of Italian is required. “From ordering food to chatting about your family, this course will get you talking in Italiano!” Vitale said. She promised a “relaxed, comfortable atmosphere” and noted that the class can be a fun activity for a couple. The course is based on hand-outs, but students are encouraged to bring any teach-yourself Italian book, audio tape, CD, or dictionary that they may have.A native of Great Britain, Vitale lived in Italy for more than a decade. She said that her background gives her a combination of experience with Italian language and culture from the perspective both of an insider and that of an outsider. Vitale holds a Master’s degree in Italian Studies from the University of California at Berkeley. The cost of the course is $50.For more information and to register, call (919) 496-1567.
