VGCC Graduates First Networking Class

A new program at Vance-Granville Community College that provides its participants with even more marketable computer skills graduated its first students in May.

Five students completed the first class of Network Administration and Support, a concentration in the Information Systems program. In addition to learning the computer programming and operating skills of the Information Systems program, Network Administration students learn to install and support computer networks.

Graduates of the first class are Betty Jo Ellis, Michael K. Kinton, Bernard Rice and Charles G. Roberson, all of Henderson, and David F. Jackson. Jackson is a Washington, D.C., resident who has returned to that area since the May graduation.

The program is two years long, and graduates earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. The networking concentration is taught at VGCC’s main campus and at its Franklin County Campus.

Course work includes extensive hands-on experience with networks, including installation and support of software and hardware, troubleshooting network and computer problems, and administrative responsibilities. They will gain experience with Cisco routers, the dominant system in the routing of information in computer networks.

Graduates should qualify for a variety of positions related to computer networks. Betty Ellis is employed in computer support for Harriet & Henderson Yarns, Michael Kinton works on the computer help desk at Centura Bank, and Bernard Rice, who also has an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from Vance-Granville Community College, works at Newton Instruments in Butner.

Graduates of the program should also be prepared to take certification exams that result in industry-recognized credentials.

Anyone interested in the Information Systems or the Network Administration and Support programs should contact counseling services at Vance-Granville Community College at 252-492-2061. Registration for these and all Fall Semester curriculum classes will be held for new students from July 29 to Aug. 15.
