VGCC Golf Tourney Sets Records For Players, Scholarship Money

The Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament just keeps on growing.

A record number of teams raised a record amount of money for the scholarship fund in the tournament played May 10 at Henderson Country Club.

Twenty-five teams of four players each participated in the morning round, and 31 teams played during the afternoon. The tournament netted $32,000 from entry fees from the 224 players and from corporate sponsors to help fund scholarships for deserving students at the college.

“We are truly blessed by the generosity of golfers in our area who come out and support this tournament every year,” said VGCC President Randy Parker.

 

“The money raised from this tournament will mean the difference in many of our students being able to achieve their education goals and prepare themselves for the future.”

In the morning round, a team from Carlisle Motion Control of South Hill, Va., blistered the course with a gross 58, net 53 score to win top honors. The team was composed of Melvin Terry, Michael Terry, Marc Reed and Kris Reed.

Second place in the morning round went to the Maria Parham Medical Center team of Damon Johncour, Adam Hammond, Bob Richardson and Emily Johnson, whose net 57 topped the Wal-Mart team of Dave Noble, Scott House, John Lyles and Shawn Byrom by one stroke.

A team representing Granville Farm Bureau of Creedmoor took top honors in the afternoon after matching cards with Granville Paving when both teams shot a net 57.

Doug Nelms, Gene Edmundson, John Winston and Gus Gustafson represented the Farm Bureau team, and Andrew Byrd, D.D. Douglas, Ben Byrd and Brent Oakes made up the Granville Paving team.
Oxford golfers did well again in the afternoon when the Certainteed team of Mike Sebastian, Mike Ellington, Tony Matthews and Mark Edwards took third place with a net 58.

Phil White of the IAMS team took the long prize drive in the morning round, while Andrew Byrd had the longest drive in the afternoon. Bert Long of H.G. Reynolds Co. put his tee shot 1 foot, 7 inches from the pin on Hole No. 9 to win the closest to the pin prize in the morning, and Doug Byrom of the Barnett Properties team took the closest to pin in the afternoon with a shot 2 feet from the hole.

 

VGCC MORNING RUNNERS-UP – The Maria Parham Medical Center team shot a net 57 to take second place in the morning round of the 21st Annual Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament May 10. Team members are Emily Johnson, Bob Richardson, Damon Johncour and Adam Hammond.
 

VGCC MORNING THIRD PLACE – The team representing Wal-Mart shot a net 58 to take third place in the morning round of the 21st Annual Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund Golf Tournament May 10. Team members are Dave Noble, Scott House, John Lyles and Shawn Byrom. President Parker expressed his appreciation to the companies who supported the VGCC tournament as sponsors. Platinum sponsors for the tournament were ACS State Healthcare and Barnett Properties of Henderson, Cardinal Health 303 Inc. of Creedmoor, Carolina Sunrock of Butner, Classic Foods Coca-Cola of Henderson, Dove, Knight, Whitehurst, Andrews Architects of Rocky Mount, Granville Paving & Concrete of Oxford, Novozymes North America of Franklinton, Progress Energy and Sprint of Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren, and Vulcan Materials of Henderson.
