VGCC Golf Tournament Raises $31,500 for Scholarships

Vance-Granville Community College’s 23rd annual Endowment Fund Benefit Golf Tournament generated $31,500 from entry fees and from sponsors to help fund scholarships for deserving students at the college. That made the tournament the college’s second highest-grossing to date.A total of 164 players on 41 teams played in either the morning or the afternoon round on Tuesday, May 15 at Henderson Country Club.“We were gratified by the response from golfers and business sponsors, who made this one of our most successful tournaments ever,” said VGCC President Randy Parker. “The money raised by this tournament will mean the difference in many of our students being able to achieve their educational goals and prepare themselves for the future.”In the morning round, a team from RBC Centura took home the first-place trophy with a score of 57. The team was composed of Cheryl Ellington, Tommy Ellington, Robin Liggon and Steve Owen.Second place in the morning round went to the team of Bob Catherwood, Phil Brackins, Steve Ball and Ray Pegram, while the team from Variety Stores — Ken Ramsey, Tom Perkins, Pete Pegram and Fred Keith — placed third.In the afternoon round, the S.T. Wooten team prevailed with a score of 56. Team members included Hank Butts, Reade Dawson, M.A. Tyson and Bobby Wilkerson.A team consisting of Dr. G. Thomas Houlihan, Michael Fedewa, Fred Owens and Tom Williams came in second. Third place in the afternoon went to Darrell Townsend, Ronnie Williams, Ronnie Grissom and Doug Nelms, who collectively represented Tires Plus and Womack Electric.Fred Keith of the Variety Stores team took the long-drive prize in the morning round, while Rolf Hendrickson had the longest drive in the afternoon. Retired Vance-Granville Public Information Officer Gerald Fuller put his tee shot 6 inches from the pin on Hole No. 9 to win the closest to the pin prize in the morning, and Mel Manning of the Harris, Inc. team took the closest to pin in the afternoon with a hole in one.An innovation this year was the awarding of a President’s Award for the “best dressed” team, which went to Vulcan Materials (Wayne Banty, Michael Carter, Bruce Settle and Charles Russell).President Parker expressed his appreciation to the companies who supported the VGCC tournament as sponsors.
