VGCC Franklin Campus Offers Variety Of Information Technology Curriculum Classes

Time is running short for persons who want to enroll in Fall Semester Information Technology curriculum classes, many of which are offered conveniently on the Franklin County Campus.

Fall Semester curriculum registration will be held Thursday and Friday, Aug. 11 and 12, and Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the Franklin Campus on N.C. 56 west of Louisburg.

For those just getting started with computers, a good foundation in computer hardware and software technology can be gained in CIS 111 , Basic PC Literacy. This class includes an introduction to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access programs, and it is offered in four sections this fall at the Franklin Campus: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 to 11:50 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:50 a.m., Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and Tuesday evenings from 5 to 7:50.

This basic course is a prerequisite to more advance computer courses that will be offered in Spring Semester 2006.

Those who want to learn more about the Internet can enroll in CIS 172 , Introduction to the Internet. There are two sections of this course scheduled this fall: Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 3:20 p.m. and Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:50.

This course teaches the history of the Internet, how email and the World Wide Web work, and how to make Web searches more effective to find the exact

information you need. It will also teach how to upload and download files, how to download and install plug-ins and helper applications, and how to get started in creating Web pages. This course is also offered online through Distance Education.

Computer certifications are becoming more valuable, and Vance-Granville can help students become Cisco certified. To learn more about computer networking, Cisco routers and the role routers play in connecting the world’s computer networks, enroll in NET 125 , Routing & Switching I.

This is the first of four courses designed to prepare students to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification exam. This course is available at the Franklin County Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 10:30 a.m. This course requires a co-requisite, NET 110 Data Communications, which is offered online through Distance Education and in day and evening classes at the main campus in Vance County.

Those who want to learn more about computer operating systems such as Windows XP Professional and DOS may enroll in CIS 130 , Survey of Operating Systems, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9 to 10:30. This course introduces students to operating systems and their significance in operating and maintaining computer systems. This course focuses primarily on using Windows XP Professional and DOS but also surveys other operating systems such as Linux/Unix. This course is a foundation for other computer courses and helps students begin to prepare for the software portion of the A+ certification exam.

Enrollment in any of these courses is contingent upon satisfactory placement test scores or previous coursework and transcripts.
