VGCC Earns High Marks in State Report

Vance-Granville Community College met all 12 of the North Carolina Community College Performance Standards for 2006-2007, according to the 2007 Critical Success Factors report from the N.C. Community College System office. VGCC was one of only seven colleges in the state to meet or exceed all 12 standards. Some of the standards are also designated as performance funding measures, including one selected by each college for itself. Vance-Granville earned a “Superior” rating, because it met or exceeded at least five of the six performance funding measures.“This accomplishment was made possible due to the excellent work of all our faculty and staff,” VGCC President Randy Parker said. “Our students deserve nothing less than the best, and this report indicates that Vance-Granville has been delivering superior service to them and to businesses in our four-county area.”The 12 standards, or Core Indicators of Success, include: Progress of Basic Skills Students; Passing Rates on Licensure and Certification Examinations; Goal Completion for Completers; Employment Status of Graduates; Performance of College Transfer Students; Passing Rates of Students in Developmental Courses; Success Rate of Developmental Students in Subsequent College-Level Courses; Satisfaction of Program Completers and Non-Completers; Curriculum Student Retention and Graduation; Employer Satisfaction With Graduates; Client Satisfaction with Customized Training; and Program Unduplicated Headcount Enrollment. VGCC selected Business Client Satisfaction with Training as one of its performance funding measures. 100 percent of businesses served by VGCC reported that they were satisfied. Among other highlights of the report: 99.75 % of 2004-2005 VGCC graduates were employed within one year of graduating; 98 % of employers were satisfied with the quality of employees who graduated from VGCC; and 89 % of VGCC college-transfer students had a grade-point average of 2.0 or higher at a UNC institution after two semesters at the university. Vance-Granville transfer students continue to out-perform students who started at state universities as freshmen.First mandated by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1989, the annual Critical Success Factors Report has evolved into the major accountability document for the North Carolina Community College System. In February 1999, the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges adopted 12 performance measures for accountability. This action was taken in response to a mandate from the North Carolina General Assembly to review past performance measures and define standards of performance to ensure programs and services offered by community colleges in North Carolina were of sufficient quality. In addition, the General Assembly authorized the North Carolina Community College System to implement performance funding based on a subset of those 12 measures. The 12 performance measures comprise the first of five factors reported in the CSF Report. This factor is labeled “Core Indicators of Success,” because it captures the essential elements of the mission of all community colleges in North Carolina. The other four factors are designed to measure the system as a whole, rather than individual colleges. The 2007 CSF report was released in the first week of June and is available on the System Office website (http://www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/) under “Publications”.
