VGCC Course Prepares Potential Buyers To Know What To Expect, What To Look For

An eight-week course called “Pre-Ownership Education” coming up at Vance-Granville Community College promises to take the mystery out of buying a home.

Classes will be held at VGCC’s main campus on Thursday evenings from 6 to 8, beginning Oct. 9 and concluding Dec. 4. Kenya Brumby, a mortgage consultant and predatory lending specialist with the North Carolina Fair Housing Center, will instruct.

“The purpose of the course is to inform potential home buyers about what it takes to buy a house and how the mortgage system works,” Brumby said. “Many houses are purchased under false pretenses, and we want potential buyers to avoid predatory lending.”

Among topics covered in the course will be learning about all the costs involved in buying a home and determining if you are financially prepared; good money management and building and maintaining good credit; evaluating housing needs; and understanding the real estate industry and sales contracts.

Also, the many methods of financing will be covered in the course, as well as understanding the whole mortgage process, closing costs and documents.

Brumby will even impart information to help one survive and prosper as a homeowner, including tax tips, basic home maintenance and energy conservation.

The course has been certified by the North Carolina Community College System, and it is being taught in several of the 58 schools in the system. Brumby has taught it at Durham Technical Community College.

Cost of the course is $25. For further information and to pre-register, call the VGCC Continuing Education office at (252) 738-3316.
