VGCC Cosmetology students excel in competition

At this year’s North Carolina State Fair, Cosmetology students from Vance-Granville Community College took home several prizes in the third annual “Fantasy Hair and Makeup” contest sponsored by SkillsUSA. Cosmetology students from high schools and community colleges across the state competed, demonstrating their skill and creativity in that contest, along with another, called “Total Evening Elegance.”

In the Fantasy Hair and Makeup Contest, students were tasked with creating unique designs and fantasy concepts on live models. Students Maria Ordonez of Warrenton, Kierra Richardson of Wise and Krysten Tant of Henderson placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively. All three take Cosmetology classes at VGCC’s Main Campus.

organized the competitions in Cosmetology and other trades in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the NCWorks Apprenticeship Program and the North Carolina State Fair.

VGCC is a member of , a partnership of students, teachers and industry, working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA chapters help students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations excel. Founded in 1965 as V.I.C.A. (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America), SkillsUSA has served more than 12 million members in its history. Today, the organization has more than 360,000 students and instructors as members nationwide. Students in a number of different curriculum programs at VGCC are eligible to join the SkillsUSA chapter.

VGCC offers diploma and certificate programs in Cosmetology and Cosmetology Instructor. These curriculum programs provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. Students can develop their skills in a simulated salon environment at any of the college’s four campuses. Registration is currently open for the spring semester, which begins Jan. 9.
