VGCC Computer classes start in January at Main Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will offer several of its popular computer-related classes for area residents starting later this month on the college’s main campus in Vance County.

A night class will help participants start a small home-based business using unwanted items from their attics, basements and closets. In “Internet Auctions – Buy & Sell,” students will learn the skills necessary to buy and sell on eBay and Craigslist. Students will be asked to bring an item to class that they will post and sell on the Internet. This class will meet in room 7136 on Thursdays from 6 until 10 p.m., Jan. 22 through Feb. 26. Michael Bacon will be the instructor.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, instructor Rex Lue will begin a “Digital Camera Basics” course in room 7100. This class, which will meet on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. through March 7, is ideal for the novice digital camera user who wants to learn basic skills, such as how to get photos from the digital camera into the computer, how to save photos on disks, and how to do basic digital photo editing. Students are encouraged to bring their cameras to class.

Finally, VGCC will offer “Microsoft Office Skills” on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, Jan. 26 through April 24, from 8 a.m. until noon in room 7136. Students will improve their keyboarding skills and develop effective computer knowledge using the various components of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. “This is an excellent class for job seekers who need to learn basic computer skills quickly,” said VGCC Computer Center coordinator Laura Peace.

Registration fees for the Internet Auctions and Digital Camera Basics courses are $55 each, while the registration fee for the Microsoft Office Skills course is $65. Registration fees are waived for students aged 65 and over. Students must pay a technology fee ($3) and a security/access fee ($1) for all courses.
