VGCC Community Band presents concert in Louisburg

The Vance-Granville Community Band will present its first concert in Franklin County when it performs on Monday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Seby B. Jones Performing Arts Center at Louisburg College.

Admission is $5, but free for children age 11 and under.

Michael Stephenson, the Vance-Granville Community College music instructor and director of the band, said that the program will feature traditional band music by Gustav Holst, Leroy Anderson, Duke Ellington, a Symphonic Panorama of the movie, “Annie,” and “Clarinet on the Town,” featuring band member Carl Cantaluppi.

Making its official debut will be an ensemble called the Vanguard Little Big Band, featuring Michael Stephenson on saxophone, Bill Davies on trumpet, Charles Peters on trombone, along with the Vanguard Combo (students who have received VGCC Music Performance Scholarships). The Vanguard Little Big Band will play traditional “big band” music from the 1940’s.

The Community Band is a joint effort between interested citizens and students. Formed in 2008, the community band has grown to approximately 50 members, including people from all four counties of the VGCC service area (Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin).
