VGCC Board Holds Meeting at Warren County Campus

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its regular bimonthly meeting on Monday, January 24 at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton. Warren County Commissioners and students from Warren Early College High School were guests for dinner, which was held before the meeting began.

 

At the meeting, Ninth District Court Judge Henry Banks swore in real estate developer John M. Foster of Henderson for another four-year term on the Board. Foster joined the Board in 1994, having been appointed by the governor.

 

Earlier, on December 7, Dr. Doris Terry Williams of Henderson was also sworn in by Judge Banks in a brief ceremony on the college’s main campus. Dr. Williams was appointed by Gov. Beverly Perdue to the seat formerly held by Grace Vickery of Henderson. Williams’ term will expire in 2012.

 

In other business, the Board approved the addition of a new curriculum program, Sustainability Technologies. This Associate in Applied Science Degree program will place emphasis on alternative energy along with sustainable technologies for the ever growing “Green Economy.” Graduates will be prepared for employment opportunities in the environmental, construction, alternative energy, manufacturing, and related industries. The Board also approved the addition of a new certificate in School-Age Care.  Both proposed additions to VGCC’s curriculum offerings now go to the North Carolina State Board of Community Colleges and to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for review. Both could be offered at the College as early as Fall 2011.

 

Also at the meeting, the Board voted to approve a mid-year amendment to the 2010-2011 Budget Resolution, making the College’s total combined amended 2010-2011 budget $44,153,454. The Board discussed future plans for building and expansion projects.

 

The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the dining hall for the VGCC Culinary Technology program at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford.
