VGCC basketball team 0-3 in early games

The young Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball season has not yet produced a victory.

On Nov. 5, the team’s first game of the regular season, and the first for new VGCC head coach Tim James, was a nail-biter. VGCC lost at home to the Mt. Zion Christian Academy “Post-Grad” team (players enrolled in the Durham prep school’s post-high school college preparatory program), 84-81, in overtime. The Vanguards were led in scoring by Moise Somadjagbi of Cary, with 22 points, and Phillip Martin of Henderson, who added 20 points.

Next, the Vanguards faced the “Force” from Southside Virginia Community College on Nov. 9. VGCC fell to 0-2 in a 78-58 loss. Three players led VGCC in scoring with 13 points each: Josh Coles of Danville, Va., Clarence Garner of Roanoke Rapids and Brad Cox of Creedmoor. Coach James noted that his squad allowed 18 turnovers. “We need to focus on taking better care of the ball and valuing each possession,” James said.

VGCC traveled to Pinehurst to play the Sandhills Community College Flyers on Nov. 12. The unbeaten Flyers continued their winning ways, defeating the Vanguards, 89-58. With 23 points, Clarence Garner was again the top scorer for VGCC. Sandhills CC was VGCC’s first opponent this season that was also a fellow member of NJCAA Region X.

The Vanguards take on nationally-ranked Louisburg College at home (Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson) on Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. For more information, visit VGCC’s athletics web site .
