VGCC Awards Record 300 Grants At Annual Scholarship Ceremony

Vance-Granville Community College awarded scholarships to a record 300 full-time students at Scholarship Day ceremonies Sept. 21 at the college.

President Randy Parker told a crowded Civic Center audience that Scholarship Day honors the “best of the best” of Vance-Granville students, and it is the second best day of the school year, ranking only behind graduation.

Parker announced that 10 Presidential Scholar Awards worth $1,200 were awarded, 78 students received Presidential Merit Awards worth $1,000, 201 students got Academic Achievement Awards worth $500, and 11 non-endowed grants were awarded.

In addition, 100 part-time students will be awarded $300 this year, bringing the total value of scholarships awarded for the 2005-2006 school year to $226,700, Parker said.

“We can only do this for our students through the generosity of the communities we serve,” Parker said. The endowed scholarships awarded this year are funded by interest on and Endowment Fund and Scholarship Program that has more than $5 million in assets. Parker said this is one of the largest endowment funds among the state’s 58 community colleges, and this is because of the individuals, businesses, industries, civic groups, churches and other organizations

that have established scholarships to assist deserving Vance-Granville students in the academic endeavors.
