VGCC announces full schedule for Fine Arts Days

Vance-Granville Community College will hold its second annual “Fine Arts Days” on Monday, Oct. 17, and Tuesday, Oct. 18, with a free concert at McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center on the first day and a variety of activities at multiple locations on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County on the second day. All events will be free of charge and open to the public.

The celebration kicks off on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., with a concert by former Granville County residents Noah Wall and Tommy Norris, both of , a Nashville-based bluegrass group. Wall is also a former VGCC student. is located at 201 Breckenridge Street in Henderson. The 1,000-seat venue opened earlier this year, and “Fine Arts Days” represents the first partnership between VGCC and the state-of-the-art performing arts center.

The second day of Fine Arts Days begins at 9:45 a.m. on Oct. 18 with welcoming remarks in the small auditorium in Building 2 on VGCC’s Main Campus . Then, Wall and Norris will be the keynote presenters at that location, from 10-11 a.m.

Next, at 11 a.m., a juried student visual art exhibit will open in the VGCC Civic Center. Artwork by VGCC students will be judged and critiqued by Katie Seiz, executive director of the Durham Art Guild, and VGCC Art Instructor Isaac Talley.

Viking Voices, the choral group from , will perform at noon in the Civic Center. The students are under the direction of SGHS faculty member Teresa McCollum.

Different kinds of Vikings will follow at 12:30 p.m. in the same location, as the Viking Band from performs. The band is under the direction of Karim Williams.

Dancer/choreographer Aijia Bryant will present a master class in Hip Hop dance in the Civic Center from 1 until 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, at 1 p.m. in the small auditorium in Building 2, will present excerpts from their recent production of “Little Women,” starring Emily Hunt and Lee Anne Lequick.

Fred Smith, an adjunct instructor of music for VGCC who has performed with the North Carolina Symphony, will teach a master class in trumpet from 1:30 until 2 p.m. in the small auditorium.

At 2 p.m. at that location, attendees can get a sneak preview of “Thirteen,” Jason Robert Brown’s hit musical that will premiere at McGregor Hall on Nov. 18 with an all-teenaged cast.

Other highlights of Fine Arts Days include a master class on ink prints with Isaac Talley from 12:30-1:45 p.m. and another on digital photography with professional photographer and art teacher Carly Cox from 1:45-2:30 p.m., both in room 5230 of Building 5.

VGCC English instructor Maureen Walters will present a make-and-take workshop on using everyday items to create works of art in room 5203 of Building 5 from 1-2:30 p.m.

The day ends with closing remarks and the awarding of ribbons for the art exhibit at 2:30 p.m. in the Civic Center.

According to Betsy Henderson, VGCC’s Department Chair/Instructor of Humanities and Fine Arts, the purpose of “Fine Arts Days,” which has expanded from a single-day event last year, is “to celebrate the arts and arts education, showcase VGCC students and the arts programs we offer, and partner with talented local artists and organizations.” October is National Arts and Humanities Month, a time when artistic and cultural organizations traditionally open their doors to connect with their communities.
