VGCC abuzz over Beekeeping class

Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer a Beekeeping course taught by Warren County farmer and VGCC graduate Mike Holland. 

The class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 until 8 p.m., Oct. 6 through Nov. 12, in room 7104 (Building 7) on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County.

Holland welcomes both beginner and intermediate-level beekeepers, or those who just want to learn more about what it takes to keep bees. He will teach students about the value of bees, their life cycle, the gear and equipment used in beekeeping, how to set up an apiary (hive), hive health and management, gathering honey and safety, among other topics.

Holland will provide hands-on instruction and materials, set up a hive in class (minus the bees) and bring in guest speakers with beekeeping expertise. He also will help students acquire the knowledge and skills needed to pass the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA) certified beekeeper exam.

The cost of the course, including materials, is $75.

The deadline to register for this class is Oct. 2, and space is limited to ensure individual student attention.
