Two VGCC Students Receive State Academic Excellence Awards

Vance-Granville Community College students Karen Jane Inscoe of Henderson and Sarah Catherine Freeman of Oxford were presented Academic Excellence Awards by the North Carolina Community College System on May 7.

Inscoe and Freeman joined two students from each of the other 57 community colleges in the state system at a luncheon honoring them in Raleigh.

Karen Inscoe graduated May 12 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Office Systems Technology-Legal. She maintained a 4.0 grade-point-average throughout the two-year program.

A graduate of Vance Senior High School, Inscoe works part-time at the law firm of Hight, Falkner and Care in Henderson and hopes to be employed full-time there upon graduation. Inscoe has three sons, Jake, 15, Will, 14, and Blair, 8.

Sarah Freeman graduated May 12 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Radiography. She is a 2002 graduate of South Granville High School in Creedmoor and entered the two-year Radiography program upon finishing high school.

“I had health problems when I was younger, and undergoing a lot of radiographic tests got me interested in the field,” Freeman said. “The more I saw of it, the more it appealed to me as a career.”

Freeman worked at a radiologic technologist at Durham Regional Medical Center while attending VGCC, and she plans to continue her studies in computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Each academic department at Vance-Granville nominated a student for the Academic Excellence Award, and nominees were awarded points for their grade-point averages, school activities, community/volunteer activities, and for working at jobs while attending school.

H. Martin Lancaster, president of the N.C. Community College System, congratulated each of the Academic Excellence Award recipients and praised them for being selected for the prestigious honor. He said: “You are here today, not only because of your strong determination to succeed, but because you had the guidance of talented instructors and support of loving family and friends. You are here today because you have taken full advantage of the opportunities provided by your community college.

“I am confident that you will continue to excel in life. Whatever you do, you know that your community college gave you a solid foundation on which to build a bright future,” Lancaster added.
