Three VGCC Instructors named Certified Nurse Educators

Three instructors from the Nursing program at Vance-Granville Community College recently earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after meeting strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing (NLN). The newly certified educators are Nursing department chair Erica L. Jastrow of Franklinton, instructor Camella G. Marcom of Wake Forest, and instructor Anna R. Seaman of Manson. They are the first VGCC Nursing faculty to become certified through this program.

Jastrow graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Lenoir-Rhyne University and later completed a master’s degree in Nursing Education at UNC-Greensboro. Jastrow has been an instructor for the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing program since 2004. Marcom earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at East Carolina University and a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. She has been a member of the VGCC faculty since 2005. Seaman is a graduate of the Associate Degree Nursing program at VGCC, later completing a bachelor’s degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and a master’s degree at UNC-Greensboro. She has taught at VGCC since 2004.

VGCC offers three Nursing programs: Associate Degree Nursing , Practical Nursing , and the LPN to ADN Transition Program .

“The NLN’s Academic Nurse Educator Certification program has conferred new visibility and stature upon the academic nursing community that is long overdue,” said Dr. Beverly Malone, CEO of the NLN. “Through the certification program, we have made clear to the ranks of higher education that the role of nurse educator is an advanced professional practice discipline with a defined practice setting and demonstrable standards of excellence.” With nearly half of nurse faculty projected to retire within the next decade and nearly three-quarters within 15 years, replacing them is of grave concern, to the nursing profession and nursing education.

Dedicated to excellence in nursing, the National League for Nursing is the premier organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. The NLN offers faculty development, networking opportunities, testing services, nursing research grants, and public policy initiatives to its 37,000 individual and more than 1,200 institutional members, including nursing education programs across the spectrum of higher education and health care organizations.
