Three shine for VGCC Vanguards Volleyball team

In back-to-back contests at home, the performances by three members of the Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball squad stood out. Kara Reese of Henderson, Caitlyn Robins of Creedmoor and Rachel Thomas of Louisburg have proven to be key team leaders.

 

The Vanguards hosted the Flyers from Sandhills Community College for a double-header on Sept. 25 at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson. Over the course of both matches, which the VGCC team lost (25-10, 25-11 and 25-12 in the first; 25-14, 25-4 and 25-9 in the second), Reese led her team in kills, with six, and also made nine digs, six blocks, one service ace and 13 points. Thomas chipped in eight digs, three kills and three points of her own. Robins led her teammates in assists, with ten, while also contributing one kill, two service aces, eight digs, four blocks and 6.5 points.

 

In the team’s final match at home for the 2014 season, VGCC welcomed the Davidson County Community College Storm to Aycock Recreation Center. VGCC lost the match in three sets (25-11, 25-15 and 25-20). Reese had seven kills, seven digs, five blocks and 11.5 points. Thomas led the team in blocks, with seven, while also making two kills, seven digs and eight points. Robins again had the most assists (six), plus one service ace, six digs, five blocks and 5.5 points. The play of Avery Allen of Henderson was also notable for her five assists, three service aces and three digs.
