Raleigh Company Submits Low Bid For VGCC Warren Campus Building

Vance-Granville Community College has accepted the low bid by Engineered Construction Co. of Raleigh to build a new classroom building at the college’s Warren County Campus.

Engineered Construction’s single prime bid of $1,742,160 was low among eight construction companies who bid on erecting the 15,212 square-foot building at the campus on Ridgeway Street in Warrenton. A single prime bid means there is only one contractor, and the price includes general construction and electrical, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning.

The winning bid has been submitted to the North Carolina Community College System and to the State Construction Board, both in Raleigh, for approval.

VGCC President Robert A. Miller said approval is expected from those two bodies within a month, and construction will begin immediately after approval. Plans are to complete the new building in approximately 12-14 months.

This is the second new building at Vance-Granville Community College to be built with $17.1 million the college received from Higher Education Facilities bonds approved by North Carolina voters in 2000. The college has just taken occupancy of a 52,000 square-foot classroom on the main campus in Vance County. Buildings are planned later at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus and South Campus in Granville County.

The new Warren County Campus building will have three general classrooms and four computer labs. There will also be a nurse aid lab, industrial skills lab and a meeting-seminar room. The design of the building will be one-story brick, similar to the three buildings currently at the Warrenton site.

In addition to the new building, the project includes some renovations and expansions to existing buildings. Plans are to expand the student lounge, bookstore and bookstore storage, to add a storage room to the Cosmetology area¸ to expand student parking, and to replace the courtyard common area and sidewalk.

“Like all the areas served by Vance-Granville Community College, enrollment from Warren County is increasing, and this building will help us better provide the classes and training they need,” said President Miller. “We look forward to getting it constructed and in use.”
