Purolator One Of Many Companies Planning To Be At VGCC Career Day

Purolator Air Filtration Co. of Henderson is one of about 80 companies who will participate in Vance-Granville Community College’s 24th annual Career Day on Wednesday, April 3.

Angela Brooks, manager of Human Resources for Purolator plants at 12 locations, said the company has been represented at almost all VGCC Career Days. “And we’ll definitely be there this year, too,” she said.

VGCC sponsors Career Day in the Civic Center on the main campus in Vance County each spring to give potential graduating students and graduates an opportunity to learn more about area and regional job opportunities. It also provides participating companies a job market pool from with to seek and hire employees, said Barbara Smith, VGCC Career Center coordinator and Career Day planner.

“In most cases, representatives will set up displays and hand out literature on their organizations,” Smith said. “This allows employers to market their companies and agencies as they meet with prospective employees.”

In addition to Vance-Granville students and alumni, college faculty and staff members will attend the event. Robert A. Miller, VGCC president, said that contact between VGCC people and the business representatives helps the college more effectively plan to prepare students for the workplace.

Angela Brooks said Purolator has hired quite a few VGCC graduates and has found them to be well-trained and ready to go to work. “We are fortunate that our employees stay with us, and we have little turnover,” Brooks added. “But we are always looking for good candidates for openings we may have.”

Purolator representatives will pass out information at Career Day about the types of jobs available in the company, and they will interview candidates for jobs if there are any openings at that time, Brooks said.

Smith pointed out that Purolator posts their job openings in the VGCC Career Center, and several college students and graduates have been hired through that method.

Career Day will be divided into two phases. From 9 a.m. to 12 noon, representatives of businesses, industries and agencies will share information about the availability of employment with VGCC students and graduates. They will also share information on training and skills required for specific jobs, salaries and benefits, working conditions, career opportunities and advancement. Last year, 80 companies and agencies participated in Career Day.

Between 1 and 3:30 p.m., VGCC seniors who will graduate from curriculum programs this year and past graduates will participate in prearranged, on-site job interviews with prospective employers. In 2001, about 60 students and graduates were interviewed during this period.

Potential graduates and graduates must sign up for interviews at the college Career Center by Friday, March 15.

Companies or agencies should have been contacted about the 2002 Career Day. Any who have not and would like information on the event may call Barbara Smith at (252) 492-2061, ext. 3326.
