Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy training scheduled at VGCC Main Campus

Vance-Granville Community College is now registering students for several health-care occupational training courses, which are scheduled to start soon at the college’s main campus in Vance County.

Nurse Aide I (CNA I) courses will be offered Sept. 7 through Nov. 3 and Oct. 17 through Dec. 12. For either schedule, classes meet Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The Nurse Aide I program prepares students to become Certified Nursing Assistants and to take the state CNA certification exam. VGCC’s certification programs offer classroom education, laboratory training, and clinical experiences in local nursing facilities and hospitals. To register for the course, a student should bring a Social Security card, a picture ID and the results of a negative TB skin test.

A Phlebotomy course will be offered Sept. 19 through Nov. 12. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., while clinical training times will vary. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the American Medical Technologists (AMT) national certification exam. Phlebotomists, also known as Phlebotomy Technicians, obtain blood samples from patients’ arteries or veins at area medical facilities including hospitals, clinics and physicians’ offices.

A Nurse Aide II (CNA II) course will be offered Nov. 1 through Dec. 15. Classes will be held Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. This advanced level course is designed to further the skills for the CNA I. To register for the course, a student must be currently listed on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry (Level 1), have a high school diploma or GED, and have a recommendation from an employer. Duties of the CNA II may include glucose monitoring, sterile procedures, IV monitoring, catheter insertion, and wound care. Topics of the course also include advanced medical math, sterile field set-up and maintenance, basic first aid, and advanced charting skills.

The cost of each course is $175 plus applicable fees and the cost of the textbooks.
