Now Is The Time To Apply For Spring Semester Classes

Spring Semester 2004 is closer than we may realize, and now is the time to apply for admission to Vance-Granville Community College. Registration for spring classes will be coming soon.

Regular Spring Semester 2004 curriculum classes begin Wednesday, Jan. 7, and run through Friday, May 7. In addition, an eight-week Mini-Semester session is planned to begin Monday, Feb. 9.

Registration for new students will be held on VGCC’s four campuses on Monday, Dec. 1-Friday, Dec. 5, on Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, and on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004.

Incoming and returning students should follow the steps outlined in the Registration Checklist shown above.

Orientation sessions for new students have been scheduled to be held in the Civic Center on the main campus in Vance County. Pre-Health students will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 9 a.m. and at 4 p.m. College Transfer, Commerce, Technical and Vocational students will meet on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and orientation for new students in all programs who missed other sessions will be held on Monday, Jan. 5, at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Once students have registered, they may pay, verify payment or charge tuition and fees at the VGCC Business Office on the main campus (or at the satellite campus where they are enrolled) and pick up their official schedules.

Business Office hours of operation during registration are Monday, Dec. 1-Thursday, Dec. 4, 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 5, 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; Monday, Jan. 5, 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m.; and Tuesday, Jan. 6. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Students can also register for Spring Mini-Semester curriculum classes during regular registration dates, and there will be two additional days, Thursday, Feb. 5, and Friday, Feb. 6, when mini-semester registration will also be held. Mini-semester classes are held three hours a day, twice a week for eight weeks in order to get the same number of instructional hours and credits as a full-semester course.

FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE

Persons who need financial aid in order to attend Spring Semester classes should visit the Financial Aid Office in Building 4, Room 4254, on the main campus as soon as possible. There they can get information on various types of available assistance.

Frank A. Clark, financial aid coordinator, encourages students who need assistance to visit his office immediately and complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). “It takes three to four weeks to process these forms so we advise, ‘the earlier the better’,” Clark said.

Eligible students may receive Pell Grants ranging from $400 to $4,050. If additional help is needed, there are state or college funds for students who qualify. In order for a student to charge tuition and fees to a Pell Grant, the application must be processed entirely prior to the registration period.

FAFSA forms are also available at VGCC’s three satellite campuses, and personnel at all four campuses are ready to assist students with the application procedure. Students should remember to take a copy of their 2002 federal tax return, or their parents’ return, when they apply for funding assistance.

CHILD CARE/OTHER ASSISTANCE

Students with preschool-age children may receive childcare financial assistance, and applications for this help are available at the Financial Aid Office.

Assistance is awarded based on the greatest need of applicants as determined by the FAFSA, which must be completed before one can be considered for childcare funding.

For more details regarding assistance for single parents or childcare assistance, visit the Financial Aid Office in Room 4254 or call (252) 738-3280.
