New VGCC program trains Activity Assistants

A new opportunity being offered by Vance-Granville Community College will provide training for area residents interested in improving the quality of life for senior citizens. The “Activity Assistant” program is scheduled to begin classes on Oct. 2 and continue through Nov. 29. Students will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. In addition, students will gain clinical experience by shadowing professionals at local adult care facilities.

An Activity Assistant works directly under an Activity Director who serves elderly residents in a nursing home or assisted living environment. Students in this course will learn about conducting a variety of programs and activities for adults who may have varying cognitive and physical abilities. Activities might include religious programs, entertainment or socials for residents and their family members. During the training, students will also learn how to conduct assessments, plan and implement activities and document participation and results.

The instructor for the course will be Cindy Powell, Activity Director at Brantwood Nursing & Rehab Center, a unit of Granville Health System. Powell has worked at Brantwood ever since she graduated from VGCC with a degree in Medical Office Administration. “Activity Assistants must have patience, endurance, compassion and an excellent listening ear,” said Powell. “They must also exhibit excellent character and integrity.”

Students must have a high school diploma or GED to enroll in the Activity Assistant program.

The cost of the course includes a registration fee of $120, and a $4 campus access/security fee.
