Need A Few High School Credits? Get Diploma Online Through VGCC

Literacy Education at Vance-Granville Community College has gone high-tech!

Beginning this summer, persons over 18 who need only a few credits to get their high school diplomas can work on the subjects they need online via a computer. The Adult High School Diploma program VGCC begins online in June and a registration and information session will be held Friday, June 3, at 9 a.m. in Room 7232 in Building 7 on the college’s main campus.

The Adult High School Diploma program is tailored to provide the training each individual needs to complete the credits they lack for their high school diplomas. Once they successfully complete the course work and tests, individuals earn an actual high school diploma and have a transcript of each successful unit.

Distance education for curriculum programs has been offered by VGCC for several years. This summer marks the beginning of online literacy offerings at VGCC.

Vance-Granville coordinators of the program say distance learning is not an easy way, but it puts the student more in charge. To be successful, a student must be comfortable using computers and must know how to use the Internet and e-mail. A good online student likes to work and learn independently, can practice self discipline and stay focused. They should be comfortable with a great deal of reading without face-to-face explanations from an instructor, and they must be persistent in getting answers to questions about material they do not understand.

To participate, a student will need a computer running Windows 95 or a later system with Internet access, as well as sufficient memory and storage space on its hard drive.

The program is free to any North Carolina resident over 18 who does not have a high school diploma. Interested persons must bring a photo identification card and proof of North Carolina residency to the information/registration session.
