Multi-Skilled Student Is Training In Third VGCC Vocational Program

You can never have too much training or too many skills when you’re trying to get ahead.

Adam J. Perkinson of Henderson, to whom Vance-Granville Community College awarded its Multi-Skilled Technician certificate Sept. 29, is proof of that point. Perkinson has completed the Electrical/Electronics Technology and Automotive Systems Technology programs at the college, and he is currently enrolled in the Industrial Maintenance Technology curriculum.

The 1996 graduate of Northern Vance High School has continued his studies at VGCC while working about 30 hours a week for the Kerr Lake Recreation Areas at Satterwhite Point and Nutbush. There, he repairs electrical hookups at campsites, helps maintain the rangers’ houses, and helps maintain and repair tractors, mowers and trucks. Perkinson is seeking full-time employment with the Kerr Lake parks to utilize his VGCC training.

To earn the Multi-Skilled Technician status at VGCC, a student must complete at least two trades programs with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. VGCC began the program, the only one among the state’s 59 community colleges, because employers said they needed workers with more than one skill.

Perkinson, 21, is single. What little spare time he has he likes to spend hunting.
