Main Campus VGCC Art Instructor Exhibits His Summer Paintings In The LRC

Scott Garrison, Program Head and Instructor of Fine Arts and Humanities, spent his spring and summer months creating seven collages. His exhibit, titled “Paintings Completed Between April and August, 2003”, is located in the Main Campus LRC through October 20.

Each painting is 24 inches square, combining acrylic paint with various bits of netting, gauze, lace, etc. on Masonite panels. Garrison said he did not use the usual painter’s brushes to create the pieces. Instead, he used a squeegee, a tar rake, a tape blade, and a wall-paper brush, among other things. Between applications of paint and fabric, he sanded the dried surface. Each panel contains distinct rectangular grids covered with several layers of paint and fabric, producing colorful textures that unite the sections into highly “tactile” compositions.

Asked about his creative philosophy, Scott said, “My intention is to operate within the tradition of nonobjective painting but to redefine it on my own terms.”

Garrison became a full-time VGCC Instructor on August 17, 2000.  He taught part-time for eight years prior to that.  He has a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Rochester Institute of Technology (1980) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Denver (1976). He serves on the Cultural Enhancement Committee and each year sets up an exhibit of his students’ work during the annual Cultural Fair.
