Kerr Lake Art Show on display at VGCC through June 15

Entries in the 41st Annual Kerr Lake Art Show, co-sponsored by Vance-Granville Community College and the Kerr Lake Art Society, have been judged and are on display at Vance-Granville Community College.The artwork will be on display for public viewing on the second floor of Building 7 on the college’s main campus in Vance County through June 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.This art competition was open to both amateurs and professionals, working in media including photography, drawings, prints and collages. Cash prizes were awarded for the best original works, as chosen by the judge, in three divisions: Professional, Amateur, and Photography.In the Professional division, Martha King of Franklinton took the first place award of $300 for her work, “Field of Poppies in Tuscany.” Ruth E. Cole of Franklinton won the second place prize of $150 with her “Spring Profusion,” while “Ballerina” won the third place prize of $75 for Alma Burke of Franklinton.In the Amateur division, Margaret L. Dry of Henderson took the top prize of $75 for her work, “Old Laurel Mill.” Nancy Pittard of Oxford took the second place prize of $50 with “Yellow” while another Oxford resident, Dolores Wilkinson, took home the $25 third place prize for “Elsie’s Garden.” All three amateur winners are students in a VGCC art class.In the Photography division, Robert Myers of Youngsville won the first place award of $150 for his photographic work “1924 Chrysler Roadster.” Wilson Vaughan of Lacrosse, Virginia took the $75 second place prize with “Kimberly’s Model,” while Sol Levine of Wake Forest was awarded the third place prize of $50 for “Larger Than Life.” Several honorable mentions were also awarded in each division by the show’s judge, award-winning artist Russell Watlington of Yanceyville. Artists receiving honorable mentions included Nancye M. Knott of Clarksville, Virginia; Laurie Stephens of Oxford; Deborah King of Henderson; Christopher Nicholson of Bullock; Martha D. Evans of Fuquay-Varina; and Christopher Steward of Franklinton; in addition to prize-winners Dry and Vaughan.This year’s competition attracted more than 80 entries from artists in two states, working in a variety of two-dimensional media, according to Lelia Brigham, the Kerr Lake Art Society’s president and a part-time VGCC art instructor who coordinates the event. To be eligible for prizes, works must have been original, produced in the past 12 months, and not previously exhibited in a Kerr Lake Art Society show.Above: Margaret L.
