Jastrow honored for Leadership at VGCC

Erica Jastrow, department chair of Nursing at Vance-Granville Community College, was recently honored with the President’s Leadership Award from Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of the college.

Jastrow’s honor is one of three Glen Raven Excellence in Teaching and Leadership Awards presented to VGCC employees during each academic year. The others, the Faculty Member of the Year and Staff Member of the Year awards, were presented to Tomeka Moss and Kathy Ktul , respectively, in the fall of 2014. Glen Raven, Inc., the manufacturer with a site in Norlina, is a longtime VGCC partner. The company’s support includes sponsoring the annual stipends to recognize outstanding VGCC instructors and staff members, and endowing many scholarships for students.

“Erica embodies Vance-Granville’s commitment to student success,” President Williams said. “She is a dedicated leader who maintains high standards so that our Nursing students receive the education, inspiration and support they need to excel in their careers. Meanwhile, she demonstrates a strong commitment to her own professional development, benefiting not only her students but also her colleagues.”

A resident of Franklinton, Jastrow (pictured above, with her award plaque) has taught at VGCC since 2004 and became head of the Nursing department in 2011. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Lenoir-Rhyne University and later completed a master’s degree in Nursing Education at UNC-Greensboro. She has been a Registered Nurse for 15 years, with experience in Intensive Care Units and Nursing Supervision in local and teaching hospitals. In 2013, Jastrow became a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) through the National League for Nursing (NLN). She was one of the first three VGCC Nursing faculty to become certified through this program.

Jastrow participated in the VGCC Leadership Institute of 2005-06 and the VGCC Department Chairs & Program Heads Institute of 2014. In March 2014, she completed the Department Chairs Institute offered by the N.C. Community College System, in collaboration with N.C. State University.

Jastrow’s other leadership roles at the college have included chairing the Academic Affairs Committee and the Judicial Committee. She is also the former advisor for the VGCC chapter of the National Student Nurses' Association.

Within the past year, Jastrow has overseen the graduation of the largest Associate Degree Nursing class in the history of the college, while also helping to lead partnership efforts with Granville-Vance Public Health, Chamberlain College of Nursing and North Carolina A&T State University.
