Health-care Job Training available at VGCC Main Campus and Online

Several Vance-Granville Community College courses that train area residents for careers in health-care are starting in January and February.

Physical Therapy Aide training, one of VGCC’s newest offerings, is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 until 9:30 p.m., Jan. 20 through April 26 on the college’s main campus in Vance County. This course provides an overview of the profession and covers key aspects of a career in physical therapy, such as physical therapy roles, practice setting, the American Physical Therapy Association, laws and policies, regulations and more. Physical therapy aides, under the supervision of a physical therapist or a physical therapy assistant, help make therapy sessions productive.

Medical Terminology, the introductory course for the Medical Coding certificate program, will be offered online, Feb. 1 through April 21. This course is the introduction to the language of medicine. Students learn to pronounce, spell and define medical terms related to anatomy, physiology, pathological conditions, diagnostic testing and medical procedures. Four courses are required to complete the Medical Coding certificate program: Medical Terminology; Medical Coding; Medical Insurance, Billing and Chart Abstracting; and Medical Coding Certification Exam Preparation.

Finally, the Health Unit Coordinator course will be offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m., Feb. 14 through June 1, on Main Campus. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to understand medical terminology, process medical records, take a leadership role in a health care environment, and handle basic administrative tasks. Health Unit coordinators may take on many responsibilities, such as coordinating the activities of the nursing staff, the doctors, the hospital departments, the patients and the visitors of the nursing unit.

The cost of each of these courses is $175 plus applicable fees and textbooks.
