Granville Early College High School recognizes 103 Students of Merit

Nearly one half of ’s students attained the honor of Student of Merit this academic year. A ceremony was held in their honor on Monday, Sept. 25, in the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center.

Of the 217 students enrolled at GECHS, 103 received the academic honor.

“This is exceptional as the majority have achieved this honor while enrolled in college classes in addition to their required high school classes and activities,” said Granville Early College Liaison Reba Bullock, who also serves as point of contact for Vance-Granville Community College’s joint high school programs.

Students had to maintain at least a 3.75 grade point average or better for the previous school year to get the award, according to Jacqueline Harris, the GECHS principal.

More than a dozen students from the early college high school participated in the recognition program. Inspirational thoughts were presented by Grant Wicker to open the program, followed by special music by Gabriella Fuentes Wilson. Speaking on various topics were Laniya Rogers, determination; Caitlyn Good, responsibility; Osvaldo Hernandez Martinez, respect; Hailey Woodlief, perseverance; and Tamiya Turner, integrity. Aukeija Merritt provided the welcome to open the ceremony.

Principal Harris recognized the students being honored with awards being presented by Dr. Michael Myrick, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and student services, and Dr. Stan Winborne, director of high schools/middle school/Career and Technical Education and public information for the Granville County Schools.

The Student of Merit Awards Program is sponsored by Granville County Schools and the Granville Education Foundation, Inc.
