Flextronics Among Companies Set For VGCC Career Day April 7

Flextronics will be among 70-80 companies and agencies that will be looking for potential employees at the 26th annual Career Day at Vance-Granville Community College on Wednesday, April 7.

Career Day is held annually in the spring to give potential employers an opportunity to tell Vance-Granville graduates and potential graduates about what their companies and agencies do and about the type of workers they hire. Career Day will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the Civic Center on VGCC’s main campus in Vance County. Companies and agencies will set up tables to provide information to graduates and to accept resumes.

Following the information session, several companies will hold interview sessions from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for May 2004 graduates and past graduates who register for the interviews.

Flextronics is a Youngville-based company that also has operations in Zebulon and Apex. Flextronics assembles operational equipment with mechanical assembly for the telecommunications industry, said Ray Valdillez, director of quality, training and environmental management systems at Youngsville. It also has developed and produces an automated pill dispenser for pharmacies that does the complete operation from selecting the correct medications to filling and labeling containers.

The Zebulon plant is involved in metal fabrication of large telecommunications cabinets and other equipment.

Valdillez and Kathy Lambert, human resources director, said the company hires assemblers, engineers, quality control engineers, inspectors, test technicians and welders for industrial systems. Lambert said Flextronics’ staffing requirements change often, and she hopes to rebuild her resume database at Career Day to have access to qualified applicants when needs arise.

Vance-Granville Community College has a long history of cooperation with Flextronics. The college’s Economic Development Services division has provided numerous training courses for Flextronics personnel. The company established a Presidential Merit Award scholarship in 2001 that provides $1,000 each year to a deserving VGCC student.

Vance-Granville’s Career Center has sent notifications to area employers about the 2004 Career Day. Companies and agencies that plan to participate should notify the Career Center by March 18.

In addition to potential graduates currently enrolled in Vance-Granville, past graduates are invited to participate in Career Day. Graduates who want to participate should pick up application packets at the Career Center by March 15, complete and return them by March 22.

Company representatives, VGCC graduates and potential graduates who need more information about Career Day 2004 may call Career Center Director Barbara Smith at (252) 738-3326 or her assistant, Deborah Sullivan, at (252) 738-3360.
