February offers variety of classes at VGCC South Campus

Several Vance-Granville Community College courses are scheduled to begin soon at the college’s South Campus, located on N.C. 56 between Creedmoor and Butner, each one offering area residents the chance to learn new skills for on-the-job or personal use.

Donna Snipes will teach a Sign Language class for beginners on Monday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m., Feb. 1 through May 3. Students who complete the course will have a basic understanding of American Sign Language and should be able to communicate effectively with a deaf person. The cost of the course is $120 plus applicable fees.

John Clark will teach a daytime course on the Microsoft Word and Excel 2007 software. Classes are scheduled for Monday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 1 through March 8. Students will familiarize themselves with the popular word processing and spreadsheet programs, which were extensively revamped in their most recent versions. The cost of the course is $65 plus applicable fees.

Administrative Assistant Training” will be offered on Tuesdays from 6 until 9 p.m., Feb. 9 through May 4. Kathy Strickland will teach the course, which costs $120 plus applicable fees.

A free course will give businesses tips for “Low Cost Marketing.” The seminar will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. until noon at South Campus.

Another night course focuses on QuickBooks, the powerful accounting system for small businesses. David Richardson will teach the class, which will be held on Thursday evenings from 6 until 10 p.m., Feb. 11 through March 18. The cost of the course is $65 plus applicable fees.

The Human Resources Development (HRD) department will offer a course called “Be Ready for Employment,” Mondays and Wednesdays between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., Feb. 15 through March 10. HRD classes are free to qualified applicants, including those who are unemployed.

Training to become a Substitute Teacher will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m., Feb. 16 through March 18. Cheryl Coplin is the instructor for the course, which costs $120 plus applicable fees.
