Cynthia Young named VGCC Dean of Arts & Sciences

Cynthia W. Young of Oxford recently became the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Vance-Granville Community College. She previously served as an instructor for VGCC’s Human Services Technology program.

 

As Dean, Young (pictured above) now leads a division that supports the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement between North Carolina Community Colleges and the University of North Carolina System, guaranteeing admission to at least one of the four-year universities for students who graduate from VGCC’s College Transfer program . The Arts and Sciences division also provides general education for all curriculum programs at VGCC, as well as certificate, diploma and degree programs in Bioprocess Technology , Early Childhood Education , Lateral Entry and School-Age Education .

 

“We look forward to Cynthia’s leadership of Arts and Sciences, as she promotes excellent instruction that prepares our students to succeed at the next level of their education and in their careers,” said Dr. Angela Ballentine, VGCC’s vice president of academic and student affairs. “She brings to her new role a wealth of experience as an educator and a strong commitment to the mission of our college.”

 

Young earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from the University of South Carolina and gained her state teaching certificate in K-12 Spanish from N.C. Central University. After teaching for several years, she continued her education at Seton Hall University, where she completed a master’s degree in Clinical Counseling, an Education Specialist certificate in Professional Counseling, and a K-12 School Counselor Certificate. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Education Leadership at Walden University.

 

Young was a counselor and director of curriculum instruction at Kerr-Vance Academy before joining the Human Services faculty at VGCC in 2011. She has also taught leadership classes for local businesses and organizations through VGCC’s Continuing Education division, conducted professional development workshops for the college, and served on the college’s Academic Affairs and Vanguard Vision committees.

 

In 2014, Young graduated from the North Carolina Community College Leadership Program. She is currently serving as that program’s director. Young is also a graduate of Leadership Vance, a program of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce.
