Congressman Miller Visits VGCC South Campus

U.S. Representative Brad Miller paid a visit to Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor, on June 4. Miller was accompanied by his constituent services representative, Nikki Wilson. He spoke with a group of VGCC faculty, staff and trustees, including Board of Trustees chair Donald C. Seifert, Sr. of Henderson and vice-chair David Brooks of Oxford. VGCC President Randy Parker welcomed Miller and discussed some of the college’s programs and projects, including efforts in the areas of biotechnology, allied health, culinary technology, global education, public safety training and prison education, for which the college recently received a national award for innovation. Granville County Economic Development Director Leon Turner was also on hand, and he praised the community college’s role in attracting and retaining businesses and in employee training. Miller remarked that North Carolina has an exceptionally good community college system, compared with the rest of the country, and that community colleges throughout his district have played a major role in workforce development and retraining after significant losses of manufacturing jobs.Parker thanked Miller for his role in creating the bi-partisan Community College Caucus in the House. The Caucus, led by two Republicans and two Democrats (including Miller himself), serves as a point of contact between Congress and advocates for community colleges throughout the country. It also helps members of Congress and their staff better understand various issues facing community colleges.Parker and South Campus assistant director Jason Snelling led the congressman on a tour of the facility, which has recently been renovated and expanded. The tour included the new state-of-the-art lab for the Radiography program and the VNet room, which uses audiovisual technology and fiber-optic cable to allow students at one campus to learn from an instructor on another campus in real time.Miller represents the 13th congressional district, which includes parts of Granville, Rockingham, Guilford, Alamance and Wake counties, as well as all of Person and Caswell counties, in the U.S. House of Representatives.Above: Thirteenth District Congressman Brad Miller (left) visits Vance-Granville Community College’s new Radiography lab on its South Campus, as part of his tour, led by VGCC President Randy Parker (right).
