China Painting Class Begins Jan. 11 at VGCC

The china painting Continuing Education class scheduled to begin Jan. 4 at Vance-Granville Community College has been delayed one week by snow and will start Friday, Jan. 11, on VGCC’s main campus in Vance County.

Jean Hilton, a Raleigh artist who has been teaching personal enrichment classes at Vance-Granville for 26 years, teaches the china painting class. Students learn to mix powdered paints with oil and how to apply the paint to a variety of china surfaces. The painted pieces are then fired to make the painted designs permanent.

Hilton also includes some oil painting instruction in the 48 hours of classwork during the course.

The china painting class is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays, and this course will last until March 15. Many students in the class return and take it for several years, according to Hilton.

Persons who are interested and cannot attend the first class can begin the following week, and Hilton will help them catch up, according to Leo Kelly, VGCC dean of Continuing Education.
