Brown, Martin make impact as VGCC Vanguards

Almost two-thirds of the way through the Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards’ 2012-2013 men’s basketball season, two freshman forwards, both products of local high schools, are making a mark.

In the first two games of 2013, Shawn Brown of Henderson (pictured above, left) and Justin Martin of Oxford (pictured above, right) led the Vanguards (2-12) in the most important statistical categories. In the team’s 95-69 loss to Southside Virginia Community College at home on Jan. 9, Brown was the leading scorer, with 24 points. Meanwhile, Martin contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds. Other leading Vanguards in that game were freshman Aaron Johnson, who made the most assists (4) and sophomore Josh Coles, who recorded the most blocks (2). On Jan. 12, VGCC lost at home to nationally ranked Sandhills Community College, 97-61. Brown again led his squad in scoring, with 21 points. Martin added 18 points and made 11 rebounds.

Martin was the team’s leader in points on the season as of the Jan. 12 game.

Both Brown, a Northern Vance High School graduate, and Martin, a J.F. Webb High School graduate, are enrolled in VGCC’s College Transfer program .

The Vanguards continue a long stretch of home games through January and February. All home games are scheduled to be played at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson, and all are free and open to the public. For more information, visit VGCC’s athletics web site ( www.vgcc.edu/Athletics/ ).
