Autumn Arts Show Set For VGCC In October

Tracy Madigan, Becky Daughety and Leo Kelly admire “Around the Cove,” a painting of Lake Gaston by Bill Mosely that Vance-Granville Community College purchased after it appeared in an Autumn Arts show several years ago. Daughety is vice president of the Kerr Lake Arts Society, which is sponsoring the Autumn Arts ’99 Juried Art Show on Oct. 10-28 at Vance-Granville Community College, where Kelly is dean of Continuing Education. Madigan is president of the Vance County Arts Council, which donated part of the $1,200 in prizes to be awarded during the show.

The Autumn Arts ’99 Juried Art Show will be held in October and will offer $1,200 in prizes and awards, including the Grumbacher Gold Medallion, the highest honor given nationally to art exhibits.

Held in cooperation with Vance-Granville Community College, this will be the 24th juried art show sponsored by the Kerr Lake Arts Society. The exhibit will be at Vance-Granville Oct. 10-28, and the prizes are provided in part by Grass Roots funding from the N.C. Arts Council, supplemented by fund-raising projects of the Vance County Arts Council.

Lisa Anderson, owner of the North Star Gallery in Wilson and former director of the Wilson Arts Council, will judge the show. Koh-l-Noor Inc. provides the Grumbacher Gold Medallion and a $200 merchandise certificate to the creator of the best art work in the show using at least 50 percent of Grumbacher products.

Jan McDaniel, president of the Kerr Lake Arts Society, said the Grumbacher Medallion is presented only to art societies that sponsor shows “of exceptional value and excellence.” Only 100 of the awards are given annually across the nation.

Autumn Arts ’99 is open to all artists, amateur and professional, working in any two dimensional media. In addition to the Grumbacher Award, judging will be in four other categories – watercolors and acrylics under glass, oils and acrylics, photography, and other media, which may include pastels, collages, drawings and hand-pulled prints. Cash prizes have been increased this year to $150 for first place, $75 for second and $25 for third in each of the four categories.

Art works must be original, produced within the last 12 months and not previously exhibited in a Kerr Lake Arts Society show. Artists may enter up to three pieces. A non-refundable entry fee of $10 for three pieces for society members and $15 for non-members will be charged.

Works may not exceed 36 inches per side, image size, and all work must be framed. Non-traditional works may be entered without a frame but must not exceed 36 inches a side and must be equipped for hanging.

Artists should deliver their entries to the Civic Center at Vance-Granville Community College between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Oct. 1-2. The college is located at Exit 209 off I-85 between Henderson and Oxford.

Anderson will judge the entries Oct. 4-8. All works will be for sale, and patrons of Autumn Arts ’99 will select pieces they wish to buy during the judging days. Sales to the public at the value specified on the artist’s entry card will also be encouraged.

The Kerr Lake Arts Society will host an Opening Reception in the Civic Center from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10, for artists who enter works, people in the area with special interest in visual arts and the news media. Winners will be announced at this reception, and all work entered will be displayed.

Entries will remain on display in the VGCC Civic Center Oct. 10-28 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to McDaniel, Kerr Lake Arts Society officers are Becky Daughety, vice president, Carolyn Hawthorne, secretary, and Judy Gooch, treasurer.
