Annual Autumn Arts Show Seeks Entries; Offers Cash Prizes, Grumbacher Award

Cash prizes and the prestigious Grumbacher Award will again be awarded by the 2003 Autumn Arts Juried Art Show, to be held Oct. 26-Nov. 14 in the Civic Center of Vance-Granville Community College.

This will be the 28th juried art show sponsored by the Kerr Lake Art Society, in cooperation with Vance-Granville Community College, and it will be open and free to the public.

Wilma Falkerson of Scotland Neck will judge the show. She is a historic restoration and wildlife artist who has worked in several media for about 30 years.

A Best-in-Show Award of $300 will be given in the painting category. The second-place winner will get $75, and $50 will go to third. Again this year, the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award and a $200 merchandise certificate will be awarded to the creator of the best art work in the show using at least 50 percent Grumbacher products. The Grumbacher Award winner will not be eligible for cash awards.

In the category of other media, which includes drawings, pen and ink, photographs and others, the Kerr Lake Arts Society will award cash prizes of $200, $75 and $50 for first, second and third.

Art works must be original, produced within the past 12 months and not previously exhibited in a Kerr Lake Arts Society show. Artists may enter up to three pieces each. A non-refundable entry fee of $15 for three pieces for society members and $25 for non-members will be charged.

Works may not exceed 36 inches per side, image size, and all work must be framed. Non-traditional work may be entered without a frame but must not exceed 36 inches a side and must be equipped for hanging.

Artists should deliver their entries to the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25. The college is located at Exit 209 off I-85 between Henderson and Oxford.

The Autumn Arts Show is one of only a few juried art shows that has the judge view original work rather than slides.

Autumn Arts features a Patrons Program, in which businesses and individuals agree to buy pieces from the show. They will make their selections prior to the show opening. All art work entered in the show will be offered for sale.

An opening reception will be held in the Civic Center from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, for artists who enter pieces, people in the area with special interest in visual arts and for the news media. Winners will be announced at the reception, and all work entered will be displayed.

Entries will remain on display until Friday, Nov. 14, in the VGCC Civic Center from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
