Ambassador Spotlight On: Kathryn Ann Terry

Meet Kathryn Ann Terry, student Ambassador for Vance-Granville Community College.

A Southern Vance High School graduate, Kathryn decided to attend VGCC with a desire to improve herself. “I became exhausted with being second best when I knew that I could be among the best.”

Presently, as a college transfer major, she is looking forward to continuing her education at a “top-level” university, and obtaining either a B.S. or M.S. degree in computer engineering or accounting.

Being an Ambassador and offering her service and time during VGCC functions has been fulfilling, she says the close relationships that have developed with the faculty and staff have been equally rewarding.

Her favorite class thus far has been CIS 215 (Hardware Installation & Maintenance), stating that she had the opportunity to “utilize all the skills” that she had learned by “putting them to the test.”

Kathryn credits former VGCC business instructor, Verna Bullock, with encouraging students to “strive for the best, to think for themselves and not to give up.” She says that Bullock was also noted for urging students to do their best no matter what the task at hand was.

When asked if there was any person or persons who attributed to her success at VGCC, she lauded her close friend, Salah Hauter, as the one who encouraged her to return to school and allow herself a second chance toward reaching the goals in her life. “He was there to help me when I felt like giving up and he always urged me to be the best and nothing less.”

Referring to VGCC as a “home away from home,” Kathryn says that the open relationships between the staff and students are one of the things she likes most.

Outside of VGCC, she enjoys working on her computer and maintaining an active role in the lives of the youth at her church, where she is the youth choir director.

Her musical talents don’t stop with the youth choir, as she is in the process of recording her first gospel CD with her brother and church choir.
