91 VGCC Students Are Inducted Into 2-Year College Honor Society

Vance-Granville Community College has inducted 91 students into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges that award associate degrees.

Induction ceremonies into Vance-Granville’s Alpha Sigma Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa were held April 19 in the Civic Center.

To qualify for Phi Theta Kappa, full-time students must maintain a grade-point-average of at least 3.5, have completed 12 credit hours in associate degree curriculum programs and meet other criteria. Part-time students must have a 3.75 GPA and also have completed 12 hours.

President Randy Parker was the guest speaker for the April 19 induction ceremonies. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, having been selected for membership while a student at Lenoir Community College in Kinston more than 30 years ago.

He congratulated the honorees on their academic success and challenged them to seek new levels of success. “Life is all about making choices,” Parker said. “The choices you make will determine what you accomplish in life; your success depends on these choices.”

“Success is starting wherever you are and accomplishing your goals in life,” Parker said.

Parker gave each new PTK member a copy of David Cottrell’s book, 12 Choices That Lead to Your Success, and he used the book as a basis for his remarks. He outlined the many different types of choices one must make in life and how they will affect what one accomplishes.

Phillip Mondou, a biology instructor, and Evelyn Hall, assistant coordinator and Information Systems instructor at the Warren County Campus, are the faculty advisors for the Alpha Sigma Chi Chapter. Mondou told the new members and their family members and friends gathered to honor them that Phi Theta Kappa began in 1918 in Missouri with chapters at eight women’s junior colleges.

Hall said that, while scholarship is the first aim of PTK, it also encourages development of leadership qualities and the performance of public service. VGCC’s chapter received the PTK Pinnacle Scholarship Award in 2002, 2003 and 2004 for increased enrollment in the organization. Hall told of going to PTK’s national convention to receive the 2004 award.
