Vance-Granville Community College is excited to announce its new Central Sterile Processing course, launching in spring 2025! This curriculum is designed to equip you with the essential skills needed for a successful career in Sterile Processing and Central Service Supply. You’ll master the art of disinfecting, preparing, processing, storing, and issuing both sterile and nonsterile equipment critical for patient care. Additionally, you’ll gain hands-on experience operating sterilizing units and ensuring the effectiveness of the sterilization process.
Vance-Granville will offer Central Sterile Processing as a hybrid Continuing Education course, combining the convenience of online learning with crucial hands-on lab experience. The in-person component will meet during the evenings at the VGCC Franklin Campus in Louisburg.
Upon completing the course, graduates will be eligible to take the Sterile Processing and Distribution (SPD) Technician Certification Exam, earning the respected title of Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT). In addition, with 400 hours of post-course practical experience, you’ll qualify to sit for the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association‘s Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) exam. Our dedicated course instructor will guide students interested in planning for the CRCST exam.
Graduates can look forward to rewarding careers in various settings, including surgery centers, central sterile processing departments in hospitals, and traveling consultation services.
Responding to local needs
The new course is the result of nearly $1 million in healthcare program funding Vance-Granville received from the North Carolina Community College System Office in fall 2024. Deans Angela Simmons (Workforce Readiness, Health & Public Safety) and Dr. Angela Thomas (Health Sciences) teamed up to secure $500,000 in funding for Central Sterile Processing, which has an established need in Vance-Granville’s four-county service area and the greater region. The course will equip students for in-demand healthcare careers while enhancing patient care in local communities.
