VGCC Educators meet Tomorrow’s Workforce at ‘Careers on Wheels’

It’s never to early to start thinking about what you want to do when you grow up! Vance-Granville recently participated in the Granville County Public Schools Careers on Wheels event, which introduced nearly 800 fifth and eighth graders to some fascinating future occupations.

Students had the chance to see the electric vehicle from our Automotive Systems Technology department and a truck and trailer from the Truck Driver Training program, as well as drone demonstrations and 3D printing examples on behalf of Mechatronics Engineering Technology. Career Services also talked to students about the College, different programs at VGCC, and how those programs can help them prepare for their dream careers.

Dr. Krystal Foxx, Director of Career Services at Vance-Granville, shared a memorable encounter she had with one of the students:

“One little girl came up and asked me the name of the program that Mr. David had mentioned. When I said Mechatronics, the young lady said that she wanted to go to school for mechatronics when she gets older because she thought that it was cool and she likes robotics and computers. This event was a great reminder that it is never too early to get our K-12 students thinking about their careers (especially STEM careers) and that they have great local college options like VGCC to consider as they explore their career paths.”

Thanks to all the VGCC faculty and staff who worked together to plan, set up, and/or represent the College at this event: Dean Kyle Burwell, Dean Stephanie Tolbert, David Bullock, Dr. Krystal Foxx, Morris Dillard, Lee Walker, Kelvin Sharpe, and Georgie Bullock.
