Reignite Program

Reignite - Sparking New Beginnings

Purpose

Funded by the Ian J. Simmons Memorial Fund and Reignite Program Contributions

Vance-Granville Community College’s Reignite program aims to support regional economic development by helping students overcome cost-related barriers to earning a college credential. This program is specifically for students who have lost access to federal financial aid due to unsatisfactory academic progress. The program provides a scholarship covering tuition, fees, and books for one class during the first semester. Ongoing assistance is available for future semesters if program requirements are met.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, participants must:

  • Qualify for in-state tuition as defined by North Carolina community college admissions, with established legal, permanent residency before the term begins.
  • Have an active admissions application and completed enrollment process. Students must have a minimum stop out of one semester.
  • Have a terminated or denied appeal financial aid status.
  • Not owe any outstanding federal debts, be in default on federal student loans, or owe an overpayment on any Title IV grants to any educational institution.
  • Participate in a selective review process, which includes a formal interview with a Reignite advisor to evaluate eligibility and readiness for the program.

Note: Scholarship aid is applied directly to tuition, books, or fees. No credit balance or cash disbursement will be provided.

Participant Expectations

  • Meet with a Reignite academic advisor to complete a Career Coach Assessment and initial advising.
  • Meet all program expectations as outlined in the program agreement. These include meeting regularly with the assigned program coach, attending class regularly, and communicating with program coach when barriers to success are encountered.
  • Attend bi-weekly tutoring for any course with a grade below 75%.
  • First semester: Must successfully complete at least one course with a grade of C or better. Withdrawal or a grade below C disqualifies further participation.
  • Second semester: May enroll in additional courses up to 9 credit hours (more only with advisor approval). Must achieve a 100% completion rate and at least a 2.5 GPA to become eligible to re-appeal for financial aid. All courses must be completed within the same academic year.
  • If the financial aid appeal is denied, the participant may continue in Reignite for one additional semester.
