Students Attend Leadership Forum

Three Vance-Granville Community College students traveled to Sampson Community College this spring to participate in the Student Leadership Forum of the Student Leadership Development Conference.

Sylvia Tisdale, a Medical Assisting student, Charis Morgan, a Teacher Associate major, and Teressa Wright, who is in the Business Administration program, attended the conference, which is sponsored by the North Carolina State Chapter on Black American Affairs.

The forum is described as a unique opportunity for students to utilize skills that will benefit them as they strive to achieve their personal and career goals. The agenda this year included workshops such as Communication Skills, How to Conduct a Meeting and sessions titled “Brother to Brother” and “Sister to Sister.”

Tisdale said the conference was “invigorating.” She said that Judge Herbert Richardson, the keynote speaker, influenced her most. “His statements were true and straight to the point,” she said. “He inspired me to feel that I can accomplish anything as long as I believe in myself.”

Morgan called the conference a “wonderful learning experience” and said she was uplifted and empowered. Saying she was glad she attended, she added, “More students should attend such programs to raise their self esteem and promote leadership.”

“Attending the Leadership Conference was a joyous occasion for me,” Wright said. This was the first such event she had attended, and she said, “It was important to me because I learned tips about leadership styles and skills which I hope to use in my career.” In addition to enjoying meeting students from other community colleges, she said, “The conference motivated me to keep my self esteem and self confidence aiming high.”
