“Make Them Do Their Own Talking”: Septima Poinsette Clark’s Work in Voting Rights, and Citizenship Education

March 12, 2020 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Even after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, state restrictions such as poll taxes and literacy tests prevented many black women from voting just as they did black men. Often forgotten, Septima Poinsette Clark played a vital role promoting voter registration through the citizenship schools she pioneered to educate adults. VGCC History Instructor Dr. Natasha Thompson discusses Clark’s life and major contributions to civil rights activism.
