Non-Traditional Cake Decorating Offered In VGCC Fall Class

A Non-Traditional Cake Decorating class will be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 on the college’s main campus in Vance County, beginning Sept. 14 and running to Nov. 2.

Maria Ayala, who lives in Granville County near the Franklin County line, will teach the class. She learned cake decorating techniques in her native Ecuador, has about 20 year experience in bakeries and has taught private classes.

Ayala will begin with the basics of planning and design of special cakes, the tools needed for decorating and icing cakes. The class will advance to making sugar fondant and creating flowers, leaves, animals and other decorations. Students will learn to design and make cakes for birthdays, graduations, anniversaries and showers.

Students should bring to the first class on Sept. 14 an 8-inch cake (homemade or purchased), icing tubes with number 2 and 34 tips, icing, red, yellow, blue and green vegetable colors, a spatula, two pounds of powdered sugar, an apron and paper towels.

Cost of the class is $30, which may be paid at the first class. For more information or to pre-register, call the Continuing Education office at Vance-Granville at (252) 738-3316.
