Decorative Furniture Painting Latest Art Class Offered By VGCC

Area residents will be able to learn now to decorate and maybe jazz up that dull piece of furniture in a class beginning Jan. 29 at Vance-Granville Community College.

Lelia Brigham, longtime Continuing Education art instructor at VGCC, will teach a decorative furniture painting class that will meet on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon for eight weeks, from Jan. 29 to March 18. Classes will be in the art room of Building 5 on the main campus in Vance County.

“We’ll start out decorating a plant stand column, and we will also paint a chair and a small table during the classes,” Brigham said.

Acrylic paint will be used on sound furniture, either new or used. Students will learn marbleizing, native American painting, wood grain finishing and folk painting methods during the sessions, Brigham said. Light and dark inlay and gold leaf painting will also be utilized on the small table. Students should bring a wood or plaster plant stand to the first session on Jan. 29, as well as acrylic paints, brushes and sponges.

Registration fee for the course is $30, to be paid the first session. For more information, call VGCC Continuing Education at (252) 738-3316.
